Can we prove the world's fishiest tales true?
This is an interesting article about the history of these occurances, though it still doesn't really answer the big question. Personally, I think though many are hoaxes, there has to be some truth to it in some circumstances.

Lake fish killed by amorous toads
Yes, I read it twice because I didn't believe it the first time. apparently warmer water is bring the carp into the shallows and they are being amplexed by male toads. While the manager is blaming the toads and upset they are protected and there is nothing he can do, I think he should be addressing the water temperature problem. I'm not sure what the carp are like in Europe, but what I'm used to here in the Midwest would be quite a feat even for a giant Marine Toad! I usually enjoy non-fiction reading because so many times the truth is stranger than fiction!
I realize that disection is a very important part in the learning process of many fields, but I also think it is over done. The use of websites that a disection is done and you can follow step by step is a great alternative to many of the disections. DOn't get me wrong, I understand there is a need, I wouldn't want my doctors first non-virtual cut be into me for a surgery, but a high school freshman can learn the basics from a virtual disection just as well. Another alternative to taking frogs from areas that are declining is to take them from where they are invasive. Many species could be harvested from Florida like the cuban treefrog or the marine toad. The marine toad could be harvested from Australia as well. The Bullfrog has been introduced into many parts of the world. I have read that Australia is working to figure out what to do with these species, they are even making fertilizer out of them. This would be good for everyone. It may be a little more expensive than to go out and collect your own, but in the big picture, it would be best overall.
There are many nature classes including one on Toads and turtles for grades 3-5!

Endangered frog may fall victim to drought
This frog sounds like it has a similar life cycle to the cricket frog of the Midwest, droughts are believed to have caused a decline in them as well. They are seeminly making a slow recovery, but the chytrid fungus is not the problem here that it is there. (at least not yet)

CREATURE FEATURE | White's tree frog
I also have a WHite's Treefrog I use for my amphibian programs. She was going to be released into Indiana by an owner that didn't want it anymore. Luckily a Camp Ranger got it first and called me. Now She helps me explain to children why you should never release a pet.
Death in the rainforest: fragile creatures give the world a new climate warning
Even in the lands so much effort has went into protecting from the hand of man, amphibians are still declining in ways we never thought we could have an adverse effect on. How many species will be lost as we figure this out?
WOW, 50,000 toads! Great news.
Global Effort Is Needed To Deal With Global Warming
This is a great article from a turtle rehabber in Nebraska. I still can not understand how people can deny this is even happening or worse yet, claim they are glad it is. So many are just not understanding the concept of Global Climate Crisis or simply won't acknowledge it in hopes it will go away if they don't look. It is real, it is here, and it will not go away without a global effort.
Frog eggs - they’re not what’s for dinner
(many predators including raccoons and salamander larvae, and many others, will eat these eggs)
Volunteer still needed to help Indiana's amphibians Become a volunteer for the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program (NAAMP). NAAMP, in conjunction with the DNR and US Geological Survey, still needs volunteers to collect data on Indiana's 17 frog and toad species. Volunteers are trained to recognize the mating calls of Indiana's native amphibians along specified survey routes. Observers listen and record the species present at established stopping points between February and June. For information about volunteering, email naamp@dnr.IN.gov to learn more. Volunteers are needed for routes in the following counties: LaGrange, Wells, White, Wabash/Whitley, Delaware, Montgomery, Hancock, Morgan/Hendricks, Fayette, Scott, Clark, Washington, and Perry |
