Four times between February and June, volunteers gear up with rubber boots, thermometers, clip boards and data sheets and venture out into the evening to conduct frog and toad audible surveys in the Cache River watershed.
This is part of a statewide monitoring program to learn more about the population trends of Illinois’ frogs and toads (anurans). Come to a volunteer orientation for new and previous volunteers at Cache River State Natural Area, Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center on Saturday, January 31 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. to learn more about the ecology and status of the 15 frog and 4 toad species in southern Illinois and how to get involved with this monitoring program.

One of the frogs they say is declining in that area is the Northern Cricket Frog. Here is a photo of one I took near Carbondale in September 2006 at the MWPARC meeting.
