New amphibian research facilities promising for future
Topic: Places to go
With the construction underway for the New frog centre for London Zoo and other facilities such as the National Amphibian Conservation Center (NACC) in the Detroit Zoo's Amphibiville it shines a positive light on the efforts and research being done to save the amphibians from extinction. Much work still needs to be done but we are heading in the right direction. With Scientific studies as well as citizen science projects like Frogwatch USA and NAAMP the future for our amphibious friends looks brighter than usually forcasted.

Foreign Frogs Frighten San Fran
Mood:  not sure
Topic: Articles
African Clawed Frog article Although this article is a little dated, the importance is maybe even more paramount now since the spread of the chytrid fungus has been alleged to be linked with the release or escape of the African Clawed Frog (Xenopus laevis). This frog was used by doctors for pregnancy tests for many years all over the world and seems to carry the fungus but is not affected by it. Therefore, it seems to within the realm of possibility that while humans tried to better understand medicine they may have inadvertently spread a disease that will eventually wipe out amphibians. Apocalyptic? Maybe Over the top? I'm afraid not. Check out this article for more info on this theory Pregnancy test link to frog fall

New cave video website from Dave McGowan
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Articles
Dave McGowan has come up with a new "webumentary" in his evolving series. This one is called Cave Biota. Cave Biota It includes interviews with several cave biologists and video of several cave animals including the Cave Salamander (Eurycea lucifuga) and the Slimy Salamander (Plethodon glutinosus)not to mention bats and invertebrates. This site will be as great an informational tool as his Frog Calls Frog Calls is to amphibian lovers and researchers alike. His videos kept me from totally boring the atendees at the Frogwatch USA workshop I held last month. I think that the videos also helped make a lasting impression of the frog making the call rather than just listening to the call off a CD. I think video will revolutionize the way we educate amphibian calls just as it has most everything else. "Video killed the frog CD star?"

The Squatting Toad Band Donates CDs for the Midwest Symposium auction
Mood:  lyrical
Daryle McGowan, from The Squatting Toad Band out of Lafayette, has agreed to donate CDs for the Midwest Herpetological Symposium's auction. This auction helps raise money for the HHS and helps to cover expenses of the symposium. The Squatting Toad Band has a very unique sound that they describe as Silky Folk Rock. Check out their site and give them a listen. Its a wonderfully out of the ordinary sound. A Big thank you to Daryle and The Squatting Toad Band for their support.song sample
Here is a different kind of squatting toad, Bufo fowleri, photographed in Clinton County, IN.

March Hoosier Herpetological Society Meeting
Topic: Out in the Field
Last night we went to the HHS meeting at Butler University. Dr. Mike Finkler, from IU Kokomo, was the guest speaker this month. His presentation was about the effects of moisture levels during incubation on Snapping Turtle hatchling's physiology. A very informative talk. After the meeting, I decided to try my Frogwatch sites that were on the way home. I monitored at SR28 Ditch, Scircleville Elevator and Hillisburg Ditch. All I heard was the now familiar owl in Scircleville. I did find out from our State's Herpetologist Zack Walker, that in parts of the state he has already heard peepers, chorus frogs, crawfish frogs, northern and southern leopard frogs as well as wood frogs. I heard northern leopards at SR28 ditch last year so I was hoping, maybe next time.

Vanishing toads could portend extinction crisis
Topic: Articles
An interesting article about global warming and its effect on amphibians. It tells a little of both sides of the argument. If you have made up your mind on the matter, you should be happy and offended no matter which side you belong to. Personally, I'm still on the fence, but see big changes coming regardless of the cause.

Vanishing toads...

Watch Frogs to Watch Nature's Health
Topic: Articles
Here is the link to the story the Lafayette Journal and Courier did about the Frogwatch USA workshop I facilitated. J&C article

The photos that were with the article in the print version were not included in the online version. They are included below.

An American toad in Clinton County calling for a mate.

This Bullfrog, found in Clinton County, has a hind leg clubbed off just below the knee. Although the cause of this frog's deformity is unknown, known causes have included parasites, pesticides and predators. Malformations like this and population declines are the reason Frogwatch USA seeks volunteers.
